Why do swimming and running burn the fastest?

If you combinded running and swimming (Hour and a half of running, hour of swimming.. moderate) how many calories would you burn? Are these the best exercises?

Id not worry about the amount of calories burnt off bec any excercise takes sometime just to burn a mere 500 calories off . But indeed those two running and swimming use the most muscles and are most recommended but id agree swimming is easiar body stress wise. If id was you id just do the ones i liked more the most. Key is to use different muscles each workout. Example you should bench press everyday but infact every second day bec muscles need time to grow .
